Orioles place Mullins on injured list with right hamstring strain; Mabry hired as senior advisor

May 31, 2025 by Baltimore Baseball

BALTIMORE—Orioles centerfielder Cedric Mullins was placed on the 10-day injured list because of a strained right hamstring. The move is retroactive to Thursday.

Mullins missed three games in the last week. Interim manager Tony Mansolino said he was “banged up,” and was trying to rest him.

“We got an MRI yesterday, very minor,” Mansolino said. “My guess is this will probably be the minimum for him. Who knows? It can go a little bit further. We are not super concerned. Right now, it’s more about taking care of Ced and making sure we get him back to 100 percent.”

Mullins will be eligible to return on June 8th.

Mansolino said that he hasn’t decided if Jorge Mateo will get additional time in center field. Dylan Carlson will start on Friday.

“I’ll sit down with the staff and see what that’s going to look like,” Mansolino said.

Colton Cowser was eligible to come off the 60-day injured list on Friday, but he’ll remain with Triple-A Norfolk this weekend, Mansolino said. Cowser, who’s been out with a fractured left thumb, and infielder Jordan Westburg, who has a strained left hamstring, lost two days of rehab games because of rain this week.

“We know what the original schedule was. It would be on this road trip coming up,” Mansolino said. “That hasn’t changed. We’ll see him at some point. We’ll get input from Colton. We’ll consider all factors while we’re out there.

“First and foremost, it’s going to be about Colton. Colton has to be ready. We can’t bring him back if he’s not ready. If he’s ready, if he feels good, and the performance is there, and he’s seeing the ball good, there’s a conversation about getting him here a day sooner.”

Cowser played four games before he was injured on March 30th, and he’s played three rehab games for High-A Aberdeen and one for Triple-A Norfolk. He’s 5-for-13 (.385) with a home run and two RBIs.

The Orioles begin a six-game road trip to Seattle and Sacramento on Monday.

Mabry hired as senior advisor

The Orioles have hired longtime major league player and coach John Mabry as a senior advisor. Mansolino said that Mabry, who will be in the dugout with him during games, could be here for Sunday’s game.

Mabry has coached in the major leagues since 2012 with St. Louis, Kansas City and Miami. In 2024, he was hitting coach with the Marlins. He played 14 major league seasons for eight teams.

“I’m excited about that one,” Mansolino said. “Anytime you’ve got a guy who has played that long in the big leagues that has coached that long in the big leagues and been a part of different eras in the big leagues now and survived and had the longevity that he has, it’s definitely a guy that has a lot of wisdom and will be a great resource for us in all areas.”

Mansolino said Mabry would assist him and the coaching staff. When Mansolino was promoted from third base coach to interim manager on May 17th, Buck Britton was named third base coach. Tim Cossins was dismissed along with Brandon Hyde, and Mabry’s appointment fills that vacancy.

“We’re down a couple of bodies on the coach staff side,” Mansolino said “We need labor. He’s out there. He’s not attached to a team right now. He’s somebody that we really like and have an immense respect for.”

All Oriole coaches will remain in their positions for the 2025 season. Mansolino said the other coaches were consulted on Mabry’s addition.

Notes: The Orioles re-signed outfielder Cooper Hummel. He was active for Sunday’s game, then designated for assignment on Monday and elected free agency on Thursday night. “Let’s just say Monday’s move was an administrative move,” Hummel said. To make room for Hummel on the 40-man roster, right-hander Cody Poteet was transferred from the 15-day to 60-day injured list. … Right-hander Albert Suárez, who is on the 60-day injured list because of a shoulder injury, has been throwing easily for about a week-and-a-half. He’s thrown from 90 feet and was supposed to throw from 105 feet.
