BALTIMORE—The Orioles list of sidelined players grew on Monday when they added two more players to the injured list — infielder Jordan Westburg and catcher Gary Sánchez. Both were placed on the 10-day IL.
Westburg is on the injured list with a left hamstring strain retroactive to Sunday. Sánchez’s injury is right wrist inflammation. Westburg is hitting .217 with four home runs and six RBIs. Sánchez is 3-for-30 (.100) with four RBIs.
The Orioles purchased the contracts of catcher Maverick Handley and infielder Emmanuel Rivera from Triple-A Norfolk.
Handley, who was the Orioles’ sixth-round draft choice in 2019, has never been on a major league roster before. He was hitting .346 with a home run and five RBIs in 15 games with the Tides.
Rivera hit .313 with four home runs and 14 RBIs in 27 games with the Orioles last season after he was claimed on waivers from Miami. He was hitting .308 with 13 RBIs in 17 games for Norfolk.
To make room for Handley and Rivera on the 40-man roster, outfielder Colton Cowser and right-hander Grayson Rodriguez were transferred to the 60-day injured list.
The Orioles have 13 players on the injured list.
Left-handed pitcher Walter Pennington was claimed off waivers from Texas and optioned to Norfolk. Pennington was 1-0 with a 3.00 ERA in 16 games with Kansas City and the Rangers last season.
The Orioles now have a full 40-man roster.
