BALTIMORE—The Orioles placed third baseman Jordan Westburg and right-handed starter Brandon Young on the injured list on Friday.
Westburg, who sprained his right ankle in the first inning of Monday night’s game in Boston, went on the 10-day IL retroactive to Tuesday. He was on the injured list earlier in the season with a strained left hamstring. Young injured the hamstring in the sixth inning of Thursday night’s Astros-Orioles game. He was put on the 15-day injured list.
On Friday, interim manager Tony Mansolino was on the field with Westburg, and it was evident that he was not ready to play.
“He was playing catch, and it was just a little bit sore,” Mansolino said. “As he threw, it was a little bit sore, which didn’t lend itself well to taking swings in a big league game. We will be very conservative there. I think if it’s September 20th, and we’re playing for the pennant, knowing Westy he’s going to be on the field. The situation we’re in, this is probably the right thing for the player.”
Young injured the hamstring covering first base.
“My guess is that we’re not going to see him anytime soon,” Mansolino said.
The Orioles have 15 players on the injured list and have placed three on it in the last two days. Catcher Adley Rutschman is on the 10-day IL with a strained right oblique.
The Orioles purchased the contracts of right-hander Matt Bowman and infielder Vimael Machin from Triple-A Norfolk.
It’s Bowman’s fourth stint with the Orioles. He’s 0-1 with a 5.79 ERA. Machin, who batted .208 in 112 games with the Athletics from 2020-2022, was hitting .285 with an .814 OPS, 15 home runs and 70 RBIs in 107 games at Norfolk.
To make room for Bowman and Machin on the 40-man roster, Félix Bautista and Gary Sánchez were transferred to the 60-day injured list. The Orioles, who have placed 28 players on the injured list, have eight on the 60-day IL.
