Orioles Promoting Top Prospect Following Trade Deadline Surge

August 1, 2024 by Last Word On Baseball

After a disappointing debut, Orioles top prospect Jackson Holliday is on his way back to the big leagues. With Jorge Mateo on the injured list and Connor Norby traded to the Marlins, Jackson Holliday is headed back to Baltimore to take over at the keystone. He was not in the lineup for Triple-A Norfolk on Tuesday and Andy Kostka of The Baltimore Banner reports Holliday is en route to Baltimore. The Orioles have yet to announce a roster move, and it’s unclear when Holliday could be activated. Baltimore wraps up their seven-game homestand tomorrow before heading to Cleveland for a four-game series against the Guardians starting Thursday.

Orioles Expected To Promote Top Prospect Jackson Holliday

Drafted first overall in 2022, the 20-year-old infielder entered the season as the consensus top prospect in baseball. After climbing four levels of the minors last season, Holliday made his MLB debut in April. However, his first stint in the majors did not go according to plan. He was going 2-for-34 with 18 strikeouts in his first 10 big league games. Holliday was optioned back to Triple-A Norfolk on April 27th, where through 60 games, he slashed .257/.426/.457 with eight homers and 28 RBI. In June, he was placed on the minor league injured list with right elbow inflammation. He spent a few weeks as the Tides’ designated hitter going into the All-Star break. In his last nine games with Norfolk, Holliday has made five starts at second base and one at shortstop.

Jackson, the oldest son of seven-time All-Star Matt Holliday, played excellent defense in his first big league experience but struggled to get going offensively. The young star returned to Norfolk for a reset and to work through his problems in a less-pressurized environment. Holliday is getting his chance at redemption. He could become Baltimore’s starting second baseman as they look to end their 40-year World Series drought.
