The Orioles also shuffled the bench. Chadwick Tromp is out. Jordyn Adams is in.
The near-daily chaotic juggling of the Orioles roster continues. The team made two more pairs of roster moves ahead of Saturday’s game against the White Sox. Infielder Ryan Mountcastle landed on the 10-day injured list (right hamstring strain) as Coby Mayo was recalled from Triple-A Norfolk. A second move: Chadwick Tromp, who you probably already forgot was with the team, has been designated for assignment, with outfielder Jordyn Adams having his contract selected from Norfolk.
Whew. That’s a lot. The first move was necessitated by Mountcastle suffering the hamstring strain during Friday’s win over the White Sox. He left that game before it was over. The Orioles are having a lot of hamstring problems this year. It sucks that Mountcastle is now out when he’s been hot over the last week, but his season batting numbers certainly aren’t very good.
Mayo should get an extended look at first base for as long as Mountcastle is out. Mayo’s 13 MLB plate appearances this season were unimpressive. His Triple-A batting numbers this year are also unimpressive: .226/.318/.452. The potential is still there. He remains highly-ranked on prospect lists that are updating for midseason, even after his big league struggles. Still, it’s time to start seeing some of that potential.
The 30-year-old Tromp was never slated to be very long for this roster. The Orioles brought him in when there was uncertainty about whether Adley Rutschman might have to miss time due to a possible concussion after a foul tip went off of his mask. Rutschman is back and playing. There’s no need for a third catcher. So Tromp is off to the great DFA in the sky with two O’s games under his belt. It’s the fourth time the Orioles have hit someone with a DFA in the last seven days.
Adams, 25, played in parts of the last two seasons with the Angels, batting .176/.205/.216 across 28 games. The outfielder has been with Norfolk on a minor league contract, where through 39 games he’s OPSing .661. I don’t know why the Orioles don’t just give Jud Fabian a chance rather than having both Adams and Cooper Hummel around on the roster. Try out your own guys rather than a bunch of jabronis. Sheesh.
