A little shuffle of guys who probably don’t matter much in the Orioles bullpen.
Are the Orioles in “rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic” territory yet? With the team currently on pace to lose 102 games, one could be easily tempted into thinking the answer is yes. In that spirit, a roster move ahead of Thursday’s series finale against the Twins: Reliever Matt Bowman has been designated for assignment, with reliever Colin Selby recalled from Triple-A Norfolk in the process.
It’s a sign of how bad things are for the Orioles lately that Bowman, with a 5.19 ERA after appearing in 16 games, should maybe have been the third in line for removal from the O’s pitching staff. Charlie Morton (9.38 ERA) and Cionel Pérez (9.20) are both performing substantially worse than Bowman has done up to this point.
That’s where the Orioles are. Making fans think, “Can’t we just try anybody else other than this guy?” Judging from the comments on this website, there are several hitters who have reached this point as well. Just the one shuffle of a pitcher today. The Orioles, for whatever reason, have decided to keep sticking with those fellows but pull the plug on Bowman.
Selby, 27, has already appeared in two games for the Orioles so far this year, allowing two runs over two innings. He may not stick around for too long. The Orioles are expected to activate Zach Eflin from the injured list to start one of this weekend’s games against the Angels. Selby getting optioned and Morton being sent back to the bullpen is a plausible outcome there.
