Orioles Recall Reliever, Option No. 5 Prospect

August 19, 2024 by Last Word On Baseball

The Baltimore Orioles have optioned Cade Povich to Triple-A and recalled reliever Colin Selby. This comes a day after Povich’s best career start. Povich, 24, is the Orioles No. 5 prospect according to MLB.com, and has been up and down between Triple-A and MLB a couple of times this year. Selby, 26, is now on his third MLB team. This move comes so the Orioles can have some depth in their bullpen after heavy usage the previous three days. However, it does not mean Povich will not make another start. The Orioles will certainly need him again down the stretch.

Orioles Option Cade Povich, Recall Colin Selby

Povich’s Promising Start

After a subpar first stint in MLB, Cade Povich was recalled Saturday to pitch versus the Boston Red Sox. Povich pitched 6 1/3 innings, allowing just two earned runs. That earned him a standing ovation from the crowd, and rightfully so.

It was a complete 180 from his first eight starts, where his ERA was 6.27. Overall, this was a promising start for Povich in many ways. First, Povich was finally able to limit walks. He didn’t allow a single free pass, which is a big improvement considering he gave up 23 in his first eight starts. Also, Povich tied his career high in strikeouts with six. It was a strong start for the 24-year-old southpaw, and he should be back up soon.

What Colin Selby Brings

Although his stint may be short, Selby has a chance to impress Sunday against the Red Sox. Every bullpen arm for the Orioles has pitched in this series, and Selby could provide a new look that the Red Sox have yet to see. Selby sports a four-seam fastball, a curveball, a sinker, and a slider. His fastball sits at about 94 MPH and is his primary pitch. His curveball and sinker are his main secondary pitches, and his slider is occasionally used. There is a strong chance that Selby enters today, especially because probable starter Albert Suárez, although effective, does not normally pitch past the sixth inning. Hopefully, if Selby is used, he can be effective and relieve the arms in the Orioles bullpen.
