BALTIMORE—Orioles starter Grayson Rodriguez, who hasn’t pitched this season because of right elbow inflammation, has suffered a setback in his rehabilitation, according to manager Brandon Hyde.
“He was supposed to throw a side [session] this afternoon,” Hyde said. “We scratched the side a day or two ago. He went and got imaging this morning. He woke up a few days ago with a little bit of soreness in his shoulder area … The results have not come back on that.”
Rodriguez pitched in two Grapefruit League games. After his second start against Minnesota in Fort Myers, he was shut down and didn’t pitch for the rest of spring training.
The 25-year-old right-hander was placed on the 15-day injured list because of elbow soreness on March 24th and has recently been throwing side sessions. Rodriguez has declined to comment on his status in recent weeks.
“Hoping for the best, but we felt like it was necessary to get some imaging done,” Hyde said. “I’m sure he’s frustrated. I haven’t really talked to him about it. I won’t talk to him until the imaging comes in.”
Rodriguez had two stints on the injured list last season. On April 30th, he had right shoulder inflammation and missed the last two months of the season with right lat/teres discomfort.
In addition to Rodriguez, starters Zach Eflin, Chayce McDermott (both with right lat strain) and Trevor Rogers (dislocated right knee) are on the 15-day injured list. Kyle Bradish and Tyler Wells, who are recovering from right elbow surgery last June, and Albert Suárez (right shoulder) are on the 60-day injured list.
The Orioles haven’t listed a starter for Saturday, though it’s expected to be right-hander Brandon Young, who was transferred from Triple-A Norfolk to High-A Aberdeen.
