Orioles’ Rodriguez scheduled for elbow surgery next week

August 5, 2025 by Baltimore Baseball

PHILADELPHIA—Starting pitcher Grayson Rodriguez will have surgery on his right elbow next week, according to interim manager Tony Mansolino. He mentioned next Monday as a possible date.

Executive vice president/general manager Mike Elias mentioned the likelihood of surgery in his video conference call last Friday, saying he had some bone that needed to be removed from his right elbow.

The 25-year-old right-hander has not pitched this season.

“We feel for him. The whole organization feels for him,” Mansolino said. “That’s a guy we’re really counting on in our organization to get us where we want to go in terms of the season and the postseason. Very unfortunate.

“It’s not for lack of effort by any means by him or by our medical staff or by other people that are involved, but it’s an unfortunate set of circumstances.”

Mountcastle’s return delayed: First baseman Ryan Mountcastle, who was eligible to come off the 60-day injured list on July 30th, remains at Triple-A Norfolk. Mansolino declined to elaborate on the reason but said “he’s feeling better today. He will most likely be in the lineup at Norfolk tomorrow. I don’t expect to see him in Philadelphia.”

Mansolino thinks it’s possible Mountcastle, who has been on the IL with a strained right hamstring, could rejoin the Orioles on Friday when they return home.

Tyler O’Neill is back in the Orioles’ lineup after missing two games because of illness. He’ll be the designated hitter. Mansolino thinks O’Neill will play the outfield on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Bruján joins Orioles; Povich back: Utility player Vidal Bruján was added to the roster after he was claimed off waivers from the Chicago Cubs. He’s not in the starting lineup for Monday night’s game against the Phillies.

Left-hander Cade Povich was activated from the 15-day injured list, and he’ll start Monday night’s game. He was on the IL with a left hip inflammation.

The Orioles optioned right-hander Houston Roth to Triple-A Norfolk after Sunday’s game. Roth did not appear in any of the four games in which he was in uniform. Outfielder Jordyn Adams was also optioned to Norfolk. Adam was hitless in three at-bats.
