The Baltimore Orioles fell 5-1 to the Athletics in West Sacramento on Sunday, resulting in a 4-2 West Coast swing. Held to eight hits, the Orioles managed to tally at least one hit in every inning from the second through the eighth but couldn’t string multiple hits together enough to push across a run.
Baltimore’s lone run was a gift of sorts. Ramon Urias (1 for 4, 2B, R) doubled and reached third on Coby Mayo‘s (1 for 4, SB) groundout to second. After working a walk, Emmanuel Rivera (0 for 3, BB, SB) stole second with the A’s trying to pick off Urias at third. The throw to third got away from Max Muncy, allowing Urias to score just ahead of Rivera being tagged out trying to advance to third.
The Orioles’ only other scoring threat occurred in the third inning when they had runners at first and second with one out.
Tomoyuki Sugano (5-4) started and took the loss for allowing 4 runs, 3 earned, on 8 hits with a walk and 2 strikeouts over 4.1 innings. The A’s tagged Sugano for three runs in the second inning when they parlayed three hits, a fielder’s choice and another hit into a 4-1 lead.
Newly reacquired Scott Blewett struck out 2 in 1.2 innings of relief and Yennier Cano pitched a clean seventh inning, making two defensive plays himself.
The bullpen’s streak of scoreless innings ended when Bryan Baker (1.0 IP, R, H, K) surrendered an eighth inning homerun to Muncy.
Adley Rutschman went 2 for 3 with a walk.
Every starter with the exception of Ramon Laureano (0 for 4) and Rivera had a hit in the contest.
