BALTIMORE—Kyle Bradish will come off the 60-day injured list and start for the Orioles against the Boston Red Sox on Tuesday night. The 28-year-old right-hander had Tommy John surgery in June 2024 and has thrown six rehab starts.
“He’s been miserable, not being able to help us this year,” interim manager Tony Mansolino said. “Watching this thing and how it’s gone, finally getting a chance to help … It’s an organizational win to get him out there tomorrow.”
Bradish might get five or six starts over the final 30 games of the season.
“I do think it’s valuable,” Mansolino said. “It’s a really big deal, the confidence and being able to have a normal offseason. When guys [have] injuries, there’s always a lot of self-doubt. ‘Are you going to good enough when you come back?’ He’s going to answer that question himself when he comes back in the next month-plus.”
There aren’t specific goals for Bradish.
“I don’t think there are any expectations for a guy who’s missed [14] months,” Mansolino said. “Over time we’ll see Kyle get back to being Kyle. We’ll be responsible. We’d like to build up innings. If you see him going out in the eighth in the first one, that’s probably not a good thing.”
Albert Suárez, who threw five scoreless innings on Friday night for Triple-A Norfolk, will throw an inning on Tuesday as he prepares to return as a reliever. The 35-year-old right-hander has been on the 60-day injured list with a rotator cuff injury.
Mansolino said Wednesday night’s starter will be announced on Wednesday morning.
Westburg’s return not imminent
Third baseman Jordan Westburg, who’s on the 10-day injured list with a sprained right ankle, won’t be ready when he’s eligible to return on Friday.
“He just ran outside. He ran good, maybe a little bit ginger in some ways,” Mansolino said.
Mansolino thinks Westburg will be ready for “some type of baseball” after the Oriole return from their West Coast road trip on September 5th.
“If he’s playing in the big leagues on the road trip, then he’s probably exceeded expectations, but it might be when we get back,” he said.
