O’s Can’t Capitalize On A Quality Debut

April 30, 2022 by Orioles Hangout

Kyle Bradish, the Orioles #10 prospect according to MLB Pipeline, made his MLB debut on Friday and it was a memorable one; the final result was not so memorable as the Orioles lost to the Boston Red Sox by a score of 3-1. Bradish’s first pitch to Trevor Story was a ball. Story eventually struck out but reached first when Robinson Chirinos (0 for 1, 1 walk) could not catch strike three (Bradish was charged with a wild pitch).

Bradish allowed a two run homerun to Christian Arroyo in the second inning. A fielding error by Trey Mancini (0 for 4) followed, allowing an unearned run to cross the plate. Bradish gave up a Rafael Devers double in the third inning and then promptly retired the next 10 Boston batters.

The final line for Bradish’s debut was a quality one: 6.0 IP, 5 H, 3 R (2 earned), 1 BB, 2 K, 1 WP, 1 HRA, 81 pitches (52 strikes). He took the loss and is 0-1 on the season.

The Orioles batters couldn’t figure out Boston pitching as they managed just 5 total hits and didn’t crack the code until the ninth inning when Ryan Mountcastle (2 for 4, 1 R, 1 RBI) hit his 2nd homerun of the year. Mountcastle’s homer was the first to clear the newly configured Oriole Park LF wall. The first baseman ended the top of the ninth by keeping his toe on the bag in receiving Ramon Urias’ (1 for 4) throw from short on a Jackie Bradley, Jr groundball (Boston’s challenge of the play was unsuccessful).

Austin Hays went 2 for 3 with a walk.

Keegan Akin allowed 1 hit and struck out 2 in 2.2 innings of relief of Bradish.

Jorge Lopez (0.1 IP) walked a batter and then recorded the final Red Sox out.

BOX SCORE

Record: 6-14
