Attempting to remain in Wild Card contention, a three-game series at home against the Detroit Tigers was a good thing on paper. In actuality, it has not been a good thing; the Orioles dropped a second game in a row to the Tigers by a score of 3-2. With series looming against the Astros and the Blue Jays in Baltimore and series with the Red Sox and Yankees on the road, this is not the time to drop games to the inferior teams in the American League.
Detroit pitching has silenced the Baltimore bats. A night after being held to just two hits, all the Birds could do was six hits on Tuesday, five for singles.
Gunnar Henderson (2 for 5, 1 HR, 1 Run Scored, 2 RBI) hit his first OPACY homerun in the 7th inning to draw the Orioles within one run.
The Orioles put a runner in scoring position in both the 3rd and 6th innings but couldn’t cash in.
Ryan Mountcastle (1 for 5), Adley Rutschman (1 for 4), Jesus Aguilar (1 for 3, 1 BB) and Austin Hays (1 for 2, 1 Run Scored, 2 BB) were the only other hitters to solve Detroit pitching.
Jorge Mateo’s (0 for 4) defense in the ninth kept the game close and gave the O’s a chance to win.
Austin Voth (5-3) took the loss by allowing 2 runs on 6 hits with 3 strikeouts and a homerun surrendered in 5.0 innings of work.
