O’s Fail To Capitalize In Series Finale

June 3, 2024 by Orioles Hangout

Sunday’s game at Camden Yards had a little bit of everything, a live hot dog/condiment race, a lead-off homerun, a leaping at the fence catch and an on-deck circle injury. When it was done the Baltimore Orioles lost the series finale 4-3 to the Tampa Bay Rays.

Cole Irvin gave the team both a quality start and a chance to win the game. The southpaw allowed 2 runs on 8 hits, surrendering a homerun, walking 1 and striking out 1 over 6.1 innings and did not factor into the decision.

For the record, ketchup won the live race today

Gunnar Henderson (3 for 3, HR, 2 R, RBI, 2 BB, SB) hit his 19th homerun of the season to lead off the game and reached base in each of his five plate appearances in the game.

Cedric Mullins (0 for 4) robbed Jonny DeLuca of a potential homerun in the fifth inning with a leaping catch above the fence. Mullins also was involved in a freak accident at the on-deck circle in the fourth inning when his warm-up swing caught Jorge Mateo (1 for 1) in the back of the head, forcing him out of the game and into the concussion protocol.

The Orioles led in the game until Tampa Bay plated 2 runs in the eighth to take the lead 4-3. The Orioles, however, did load the bases with one out in their half of the eighth but failed to cash in and had one on with two outs in the ninth and again failed to cash in. For the game Baltimore left a baker’s dozen on the bases and went 3 for 8 with runners in scoring position.

Austin Hays went 2 for 4 with a double.

Ryan Mountcastle, Anthony Santander, Jordan Westburg, Ryan O’Hearn, Ramon Urias and James McCann each recorded a hit in the game.

Danny Coulombe (1.1 IP, H, K) continues to deliver decent relief appearances.

Dillon Tate (2-1) was tagged with the loss for his 2 run, 4 hit, 1 strikeout effort over 1.1 innings
