Baltimore Orioles fans received one half of their wish list on Saturday when the team purchased the contract of outfielder and #4 Prospect Dylan Beavers from the Norfolk Tides. In order to make room for Beavers, outfielder Greg Allen was designated for assignment.
Beavers went 1 for 5 with a ninth inning lead-off double and 2 strikeouts. His debut was spoiled a bit as the Orioles lost 5-4 in 12 innings to the Houston Astros.
The Ramon Empire Prevails
For the second game in a row, former Oriole Ramon Urias played a key role in the outcome of the game. It was Urias who ended Brandon Young‘s bid for a perfect game on Friday. On Saturday, Urias spoiled the party in the 12th inning when his groundball to short with the bases loaded and one out went from a potential double play to a walk-off when Jackson Holliday‘s relay missed Coby Mayo at first; Carlos Correa scored the winning run as a result.
The offense kept coming back
Houston established a 3-0 lead by the end of the fourth inning on Saturday. A two out rally in the fifth by the Orioles resulted in two runs. Daniel Johnson singled and scored on Dylan Carlson‘s 6th homerun of the season; Carlson has now homered in consecutive games and finished the night 2 for 4 with a triple, a homerun, 2 runs scored, 2 RBI and a walk and is slashing .304/ .385/ .652 with 4 RBI over his last 8 games.
Houston extended the lead on a Jose Altuve solo homerun off reliever Kade Strowd (1.0 IP, HR, BB, K) in the seventh only to see the Orioles tie the game in the eighth. Carlson drew a lead-off walk and scored on Holliday’s 15th homerun of the season.
Baltimore put a runner in scoring position in the ninth on the Beavers’ double and obviously started the 10th, 11th and 12th with the ghost runner at second but went an embarassing 0 for 14 with runners in scoring position for the game.
A mixed bag of pitching
Interim Manager Tony Mansolino went with Rico Garcia as an opener for Cade Povich on Saturday. Garcia emerged unscathed despite allowing a pair of hits in his one inning of work. Povich pitched the next 5.0 innings and allowed 3 runs on 5 hits with 3 walks, 10 punchouts and a wild pitch. That wild pitch in the second inning came after a lead-off walk and led to Houston’s first run on a Mauricio Dubon RBI single.
Yennier Cano, Yaramil Hiraldo and Dietrich Enns held the Astros in check in innings eight through eleven with Enns walking 2 and striking out 3 across the 10th and 11th.
Keegan Akin (4-3) was tagged with the loss after he intentionally walked Altuve and Christian Walker to load the bases for Urias.
