The Baltimore Orioles began their first homestand of September with a 5-2 win over the Oakland Athletics Friday night. The organization has adopted the catch phrase “Chaos Comin’” and the team showed just what kind of chaos they can cause.
The game was tied at two going into the bottom of the eighth inning and that is when the wheels came off for Oakland. Anthony Santander (0 for 3, 1 Run Scored, 1 BB) opened the inning with a walk. A single by Ryan Mountcastle (2 for 3, 1 Run Scored, 1 RBI, 1 BB) followed. Ramon Urias (1 for 3, 1 2B) advanced them with a sacrifice bunt and an intentional walk to pinch-hitter Cedric Mullins (0 for 0, 1 Run Scored, 1 BB) loaded the bases. Adley Rutschman (0 for 0, 1 RBI, 1 BB), in a pinch-hitting role, worked a bases loaded RBI walk and Jorge Mateo (1 for 4, 2 RBI) singled in two more runs.
Four batters, 2 pinch hitters, 2 hits, a sac bunt and working the count meant three runs; chaos comin’.
Gunnar Henderson went 2 for 4 with 2 doubles and a run scored while receiving a standing ovation prior to his first at-bat in Camden Yards.
Dean Kremer started on the bump and allowed 2 runs on 5 hits while walking 1 and striking out 6 over 6.0 innings.
Dillon Tate (3-3) was credited with the win and allowed 1 hit and struck out 1 in 1.1 innings of relief.
