Just as the fish fly at Pike Place Fish Market in Seattle, baseballs were flying at T-Mobile Park on Monday. The flying baseballs were courtesy of the Baltimore Orioles, who blasted five homeruns in a 9-2 win over the Seattle Mariners.
The Orioles hit back-to-back homeruns in two consecutive innings, the third and the fourth. Adley Rutschman (2 for 5, 1 run scored, 2 RBI) started the homerun barrage and Ryan Mountcastle (1 for 4, 1 run scored, 1 RBI). The Rutschman homerun was special in that it was hit with his 90 year old grandfather Ad in the stands.
Anthony Santander (1 for 4, 1 run scored, 3 RBI) began the fourth inning back-to-back homerun festivities that Austin Hays (2 for 4, 1 run scored, 1 RBI, 1 HBP) continued.
The final homerun was hit by Jorge Mateo (1 for 4, 1 run scored, 1 RBI) in the 6th inning. All nine Baltimore starters tallied at least one hit.
Tyler Wells (6-4) had a no-hitter going until he a homerun to Cal Raleigh with two outs in the fifth inning. Wells finished with a line of 5.0 IP, 1 H, 1 Run, 3 K and a hit batter; he was the winning pitcher.
Keegan Akin earned his first save of 2022 with a 3.1 inning effort in which he allowed 1 hit, walked 2 and struck out 3.
With the win, the Orioles secured their first winning month since August 2017.
