The Baltimore Orioles will return to Camden Yardsfor the home opener on the heels of Sunday’s 3-1 loss to the Toronto Blue Jays. The game marked the MLB debut of Tomoyuki Sugano (0-1) and did not go as hoped. Sugano was removed from the mound during his fifth inning warm-up and was seen flexing his right hand due to cramping. He ultimately took the loss for allowing 2 runs on 2 hits with 2 walks and a strikeout over 4.0 innings. Sugano threw 73 pitches (45 strikes) in facing 18 batters and faced traffic on the bases every inning except the second.
Matt Bowman (1.2 IP, K), called up to replace Albert Suarez (15-day IL, shoulder inflamation) and Bryan Baker (1.2 IP, H, 4 K) held the Blue Jays in check. Cionel Perez (0.2 IP, 2 H (HR), R) surrendered a seventh inning homerun to Toronto’s Tyler Heineman.
Clutch hitting was the issue on Sunday as the Orioles went 0 for 7 with runners in scoring position. The team scattered nine hits (8 singles) in the game with every starter but Jorge Mateo (0 for 3) tallying at least a hit.
Ryan O’Hearn went 2 for 2 with a double, 1 run scored and a walk. He scored on a first inning wild pitch by Toronto starter Chris Bassitt after going first to third on a Tyler O’Neill (1 for 4) single.
Jackson Holliday went 1 for 4 with a stolen base.
Keep an eye on Colton Cowser (1 for 4) who was pinch hit for by Gary Sanchez (0 for 1) in the ninth inning after jamming his left thumb on a head-first slide into first base in the seventh inning.
