It isn’t a secret that a proverbial dark cloud has hovered over the 2025 Baltimore Orioles season. It was appropriate then that the opening game of final home series saw actual dark clouds hovering above. Rain delayed the start of Tuesday’s game seventy-one minutes and reappeared somewhat during the middle innings.
The wait was worth it, however, as the Orioles shut out the Tampa Bay Rays (76-81) 6-0 in front of an announced crowd of 15,267 fans at Camden Yards in a game that was played in 2 hours and 29 minutes.
Orioles’ pitchers limited the Rays to a pair of single, one to lead off the fourth inning and the other in the seventh. Baltimore starter Dean Kremer (11-10) deserved to let his hair down after the performance he gave the team. Obviously, none of the Baltimore Ravens losing ju-ju followed Kremer and the rest of the team after their visit to Monday Night Football at M & T Bank Stadium. Kremer limited the Rays to one hit while striking out 4 over 6.1 innings; his only blemishes were a wild pitch thrown and a hit batter. It was his 9th quality start of the season and allowed him to finish the season with a winning record.
Regarding his season, Kemer had this to say, “There’s a lot to be learned. There’s a lot to be happy about. There’s some things that were a little frustrating throughout the year, but grow every year and try to get better.”
Jose Castillo, Colin Selby and Yaramil Hiraldo finished what Kremer started. Castillo allowed the Rays’ second hit, Selby pitched a clean ninth, fielding two of thenthree outs himself, and Hiraldo walked 1 and struck out 2.
Colton Cowser was the offensive catalyst, going 2 for 4 with a two-run homerun to centerfield in the sixth inning while scoring a pair of runs as well.
Gunnar Henderson went 1 for 2 with 2 RBI and a walk and a stolen base while his partner on the left side of the infield, Jordan Westburg, went 2 for 3 with a double, 1 run scored and 1 RBI. Coby Mayo went 2 for 2 with a run scored and a walk. Tyler O’Neill knocked in a run as well.
Adley Rutschman was hitless in 4 at-bats in his return form the Injured List.
For the Birdland members who find meaning in the little things, the Orioles are now just 2.0 games behind Tampa Bay for last place in the American League East. Preventing the New York Yankees (89-68) from winning the AL East crown is still in play this weekend even though New York did clinch their spot in the playoffs with a 3-2 win over the Chicago White Sox (58-99).
2025 Record: 74-83
