It really is difficult to get excited because it is the Chicago White Sox (18-40) after all, but the Baltimore Orioles won a second consecutive game 4-2 on Saturday afternoon. A quality start and two homeruns made up the winning formula in front of 23, 470 fans. Grayson Rodriguez even made an appearance at Camden Yards, not as a player but as the bobble-head giveaway.
Dean Kremer (5-5) recorded the win on a windy day at the yard. He gave up just one run on six hits while walking one and striking out seven over 6.0 innings; 64 of his 102 pitches were strikes. It was the third quality start of the season by Kremer with all three coming in the month of May.
Batting from the lead-off spot, Jackson Holliday (1 for 4, HR, R, RBI) hit the third pitch he saw 394 ft. to rightfield for his 7th homerun of the year.
Jorge Mateo (1 for 1, HR, R, 2 RBI, 2 BB, 2 SB) hit a wind-aided two-run homerun, his first of the year, in the fifth inning.
The Orioles scored their second run on a Coby Mayo (1 for 3, RBI) RBI single in the fourth. Ryan O’Hearn (1 for 4, 2B, R) hit a one-out double and scored on Mayo’s two-out single. On the play, Mayo was caught between first and second and during the ensuing rundown, made a left turn into the infield and tried to take out Chicago second baseman Lenyn Sosa. Interim Manager Tony Mansolino justified it post-game as an aggresive play but once he left his baseline he was out; no way that could be construed as interference.
Mateo gave the team a scare in the eighth when he collided with Heston Kjerstad (0 for 3) on a fly ball. Mateo’s surgically repaired left arm could be seen run into and bent backwards. Jordyn Adams did replace Mateo in centerfield in the ninth.
As a team, the Orioles failed to record a hit after the Mateo homerun.
Dylan Carlson went 1 for 3 with a double and a run scored.
Yennier Cano did allow a run on two hits in relief of Kremer.
Felix Bautista, pitching for a second consecutive day and after throwing 29 pitches on Friday, walked 2 and struck out 3 in the ninth to earn his 10th save.
Of note during the MASN broadcast, Jim Palmer, after lacking objectivity in describing Chicago’s shortcomings, as if the Orioles didn’t suffer many of the same, was quite vocal in his opposition of the move to pitch Bautista. On this day however, it worked out for the best.
