Ramón Laureano and Ryan O’Hearn Traded to Padres

August 1, 2025 by Maryland Sports Blog

The Baltimore Orioles traded OF Ramón Laureano and first baseman Ryan O’Hearn to the San Diego Padres in return for six prospects.

Ryan O’Hearn

O’Hearn was drafted by the Kansas City Royals in 2014 and made his major league debut in 2018. He was designated for assignment by the Royals in December 2022, and the Orioles received him in exchange for cash considerations in January 2023. O’Hearn was an All-Star in 2025, batting sixth as the designated hitter. O’Hearn was not expected to be a major pickup by the Orioles, but ended up batting .277 with the Orioles, getting 305 hits, 42 home runs and having an OPS of .796 over three seasons.

Ramón Laureano

Laureano was selected in 2014 by the Houston Astros in the 16th round of the draft. He eventually was eligible for the Rule 5 draft and was trade to the Oakland Athletics after the 2017 season. Laureano made his major league debut on August 3, 2018. Laureano was only with the Orioles for 82 games, but certainly made an impact. He hit .290 through 259 at bats and had a WAR of 2.9.

The Orioles received six players in return for Laureano and O’Hearn: Boston Bateman, Tyson Neighbors, Tanner Smith, Cobb Hightower, Brandon Butterworth, and Victor Figueroa.

Boston Bateman

Batemen is a 19-year old left-handed pitcher and was signed by the Padres in 2024. Since then, he has pitched for the Single-A Lake Elsinore Storm in 15 games, going 5-5 with a 4.08 ERA. He has pitched 68.1 innings and has a WHIP of 1.32.

Tyson Neighbors

Neighbors, a 22-year old right-handed pitcher, started the 2025 season in high-A before being moved to the Double-A San Antonio Missions. Neighbors has pitched in 14 games with the Missions and has a 2.57 ERA and a 0.95 WHIP. Opponents are batting .143 against him at the Double-A level.

Tanner Smith

Smith is a right-handed pitcher and was picked in the 15th round of the 2024 draft. He started the 2025 season in the Rookie League and is now at the Single-A level. So far at Single-A, he is 1-1 with a 1.80 ERA in 9 games and 15 innings.

Cobb Hightower

Hightower is a shortstop and was signed in 2024 in the third round of the draft. In 2025 at the Single-A level, he hit .239, with one home run, 21 RBIs, and seven stolen bases. Hightower was also a DH for one game at the Single-A level. He was assigned to the Single-A Delmarva Shorebirds after the trade on July 31st.

Brandon Butterworth

Butterworth is a 22-year old shortstop who bats and throws right-handed. He has spent all of 2025 at the high-A level and will continue this with the Orioles’ high-A affiliate, the Aberdeen Ironbirds. He is batting .267 with 11 home runs and a .782 OPS. Butterworth has also played second base, left field, and center field at the high-A level.

Victor Figueroa

Figueroa mainly plays first base, but has also played right field and been the designated hitter at the Single-A level. Figueroa started the 2025 season at the rookie-level with the ACL Padres and won the ACL Player of the Week Award twice in May 2025. At the Single-A level, Figueroa is hitting .318 with an OPS of 1.008. He has 12 home runs, 47 RBIS, and 74 hits. Figueroa will start his time with the Orioles on the Delmarva Shorebirds.

The Orioles have received six promising prospects for O’Hearn and Laureano and fans are happy with the idea of a strong Farm System for the upcoming seasons. Good luck to O’Hearn and Laureano as they start a new era of their careers.
