Rutschman’s 8th-inning home run is Orioles’ only offense in 4-2 loss to Tigers

September 16, 2024 by Baltimore Baseball

DETROIT—The Orioles experienced another frustrating game in a month that has been full of them. They’ve lost three consecutive series—to Tampa Bay, Boston and the hot Detroit Tigers.

The Tigers, who are making a late push for a wild-card spot, beat the Orioles, 4-2, before 20,643 at Comerica Park on Sunday.

Adley Rutschman hit a two-run home run, his 19th and first since August 18th, in the eighth inning for the Orioles’ only runs.

Heston Kjerstad, who was activated from the 10-day injured list before the game, batted fourth and grounded out twice before he was lifted for Eloy Jiménez in the sixth inning.

The Orioles (84-66) had runners in scoring position in the first four innings against Keider Montero but none scored. They were 1-for-8 with runners in scoring position.

Montero (6-6) allowed five hits in five innings, walking one and striking out one.

Jason Foley, who entered after Will Vest allowed Rutschman’s home run, recorded the last four outs and registered his 23rd save for Detroit (77-73).

Cade Povich allowed a two-run home run to Riley Greene in the third inning. It was Greene’s 22nd home run. Povich allowed just one other hit, a second-inning double to Spencer Torkelson.

Povich (2-9) allowed the two runs on two hits in five innings, striking out eight and walking two, but he became another Oriole starter who didn’t receive any support from the offense.

Jacob Webb, who was also reinstated from the injured list before the game, allowed a run on a walk to Matt Vierling and a run-scoring single to Colt Keith in the sixth.

Gregory Soto allowed Greene’s 23rd home run with one out in the eighth.
