For the second night in a row, the Baltimore Orioles established an early lead (3-0 after two innings) only to see that lead evaporate and be surpassed in the later innings. The result on a dreary and rainy night in front of an announced crowd of 14,491 at Oriole Park at Camden Yards was a 6-4 defeat at the hands of the St. Louis Cardinals on Wednesday night.
Three consecutive singles to start the second inning and a throwing error on the thrid singla, a Cedric Mullins (2 for 4, 2 R, SB) bunt, allowed Ryan O’Hearn (1 for 4, R, BB) to score the first run. Mullins scored on a Jackson Holliday (3 for 5, 2 2B, RBI) double but not before Maverick Handley (1 for 3, RBI) grounded out, allowing Ramon Urias (1 for 3, R, BB) to score the second run of the inning.
In the fourth inning Baltimore once again opened with three consecutive singles. Dylan Carlson’s (2 for 4, RBI) single knocked in Mullins with the team’s fourth run.
St. Louis scored 2 runs in the fourth inning and 3 runs in the fifth before capping off their night with a sinle run in the seventh.
Starter Cade Povich (1-4) was not very sharp, allowing 5 runs on 8 hits (HR) while walking 3, striking out 9 and throwing a wild pitch over 4.2 innings. He needed 96 pitches (56 strikes) to do so and had only one clean inning, the third, when he struck out the side. Povich issued a walk to open the Cardinal’s second but saw that base runner erased on a double play.
Recently recalled Matt Bowman allowed a run on 1 hit and struck out 2 over 2.0 innings.
Andrew Kittredge allowed 3 hits, walked 2 and struck out 2 in 1.0 inning of work while Seranthony Dominguez struck out 3 in 1.1 innings.
Ryan Mountcastle went 2 for 5 with a double.
