On a Monday night when the train could have run off the tracks, the Baltimore Orioles defeated the New York Yankees 4-3 to open the homestand on a positive note. Prior to the contest, Gary Sanchez and Jordan Westburg were placed on the 10 day IL (Westburg’s placement came two minutes prior to the satrt of the game). Additionally, Grayson Rodriguez and Colton Cowser were moved to the 60 day IL; injuries were the theme of the day, for sure.
Cue up Bonnie Tyler’s “I Need A Hero” because Tomoyuki Sugano (3-1) certainly delivered. Making his sixth start of the year, Sugano scattered 5 hits over 5.0 scoreless innings while walking 1, striking out 8 and hitting a batter to record the win, his third.
Ryan O’Hearn went 1 for 4 with a third inning three run homerun to the right field flag court, 1 run scored and 3 RBI.
Cedric Mullins went 2 for 3 with a walk while robbing Paul Goldschmidt of a potential homerun in the fifth inning.
Ramon Laureano went 2 for 3 with 2 doubles, 1 RBI and a stolen base.
Gunnar Henderson went 1 for 3 with a double, 1 run scored and a walk.
Out of the bullpen, Keegan Akin struck out 3 over 1.2 innings and Gregory Soto struck out 2 over 1.1 innings despite allowing 2 runs on 3 hits and throwing a wild pitch.
Felix Bautista recorded his 4th save by striking out 2 in the ninth.
The team continues to struggle with runners in scoring position, going 1 for 7 in the contest.
