Target rehired a North Dakota woman who said she was fired for wearing a nametag that read “Trust in Jesus,” a spokesperson for the company said.
Denise Kendrick told Valley News Live she was instructed not to wear the nametag, which also appeared to have a cross drawn on it. Kendrick was told she could no longer work at the Fargo location after she replied that she would continue using it, according to the news station.
“Upon learning of this situation, we conducted a review and determined that the team member should not have been terminated,” the Target spokesperson said. “We apologized to her, offered to reinstate her immediately, and are pleased that she is back working in our store.”
The representative added that Target is taking “appropriate steps” to address the actions taken by the “leader” involved in the situation and is working with the Fargo store to ensure the company’s policies are “appropriately followed” in the future.
Kendrick said she received a list of contacts to discuss Target’s dress code with after asking to have the reason for her termination in writing, according to Valley News Live.
“They gave me this paper with all these phone numbers on it and said, ‘If you have any questions about the violation of the dress code, just call one of these numbers,’” Kendrick explained. “And he just kept repeating it, we just kept going back and forth, and it was going nowhere.”
Kendrick reportedly noted that nobody had indicated they had a problem with her apparel expressing Christian themes, telling the news station she had been wearing clothes showing her faith for months. She reportedly added that other workers at the store had worn nametags with rainbows.
