The Baltimore Orioles outlasted the Texas Rangers (41-44) 10-6 in eleven innings Monday night in Arlington. Baltimore plated 7 of their 10 runs in extra innings to hold on for the win and needed every one of those runs to secure the victory. Despite the feel good final, the Orioles remain 7.0 games back in the AL Wild Card race and can’t seem to gain ground no matter what they do.
The gut punches continue for this team. On a night that we learned elbow tendonitis pushed Charlie Morton‘s next start back the team probably lost backup catcher Chadwick Tromp to the IL. Tromp appeared to hurt his back during his second inning at-bat and that resulted in the Orioles losing the DH as Gary Sanchez has to slide from the DH spot to the backstop. Interim Manager Tony Mansolino reveald post-game that Tromp will probably need an IL stint.
Sanchez cleared the bases with his third inning double to stake the Orioles to a three run lead. Starter Trevor Rogers made that lead hold up until he surrendered a two run homerun to Marcus Semien in the sixth inning. Rogers yielded to the bullpen a batter later and finished the night having allowed 2 runs on 3 hits, 1 homerun, with 3 walks and 5 strikeouts over 5.1 innings.
Texas’ Michael Helman tied the game at three in the seventh with his walk and steal of second base. Sanchez’s throw to second got away and his drop of the throw home allowed Helman to cross the plate.
In the tenth Gunnar Henderson homered with the ghost runner Ramon Laureano on base and Colton Cowser followed that up with a homerun of his own.
Adolis Garcia tied the game at 6 apiece with his three-run homerun off of Keegan Akin (3-0).
A pinch-hit single by Luis Vazquez in th eleventh put the Orioles back in the lead before back-to-back doubles by Henderson and Laureano extended the lead to 10-6.
Andrew Kittredge pitched the eleventh and struck out pitcher Jack Leiter during a clean inning that preserved the win for Akin.
Laureano hit three doubles among his four hits and Henderson had four RBI, all in extra innings, for the Birds.
