The Orioles Are Swept In A DH

September 12, 2021 by Orioles Hangout Leave a Comment

Saturday’s double-header with the Blue Jays resulted in two losses for the Baltimore Orioles. Toronto won game one 11-10 and then followed that up with an 11-2 win in game two.

Game one saw the Orioles take a first inning lead that the Birds from Baltimore extended every time the Blue Jays started to get close and grew to 10-5 after 4 innings. Six unanswered runs by the Blue Jays over the final three innings gave the Blue Jays the win. The winning blow came when George Springer hit a two-run homerun in the ninth inning off of reliever Tyler Wells (1.1 IP, 4 R, 3 H, 1 BB, 1 K, 1 WP).

Austin Hays (2 for 5, 2 runs scored, 3 RBI) extended his hitting streak to 17 games with two homeruns.

Anthony Santander (3 for 4, 3 runs scored, 2 RBI) and Ryan Mountcastle (1 for 5, 1 run scored, 1 RBI) also hit homeruns.

Dean Kremer started and allowed 5 runs on 7 hits, 3 of which were homeruns, while walking 1 and striking out 2.

Game 2 saw Keegan Akin (6.0 IP, 3 R, 3 H, 2 BB, 2 K) cruise to a 1-0 lead and a no-hitter through six innings. He took the mound for the seventh and gave up three consecutive hits, a single, a homerun and another single before being removed for Tanner Scott. That is when the wheels came off the cart. Scott allowed 6 runs on 6 hits (2 homeruns) in one-third of the seventh inning. Manny Barreda got the final two outs but not before allowing 2 runs on 2 hits (1 homerun) and a walk.

The Orioles mounted a “comeback” in the bottom of the seventh when Richie Martin (1 for 1, 1 2B, 1 run scored) scored on a Bo Bichette throwing error.

Cedric Mullins went 1 for 4 with a homerun, 1 run scored and 1 RBI.

Austin Hays went 0 for 3, ending his hitting streak.

Anthony Santander went 1 for 3 with a double.
