The Second Inning Was All That Was Needed

The Baltimore Orioles defeated the Minnesota Twins 6-2 on Saturday. The first inning gave no indication of what would transpire. Matched up against Minnesota’s Sonny Gray, the Orioles went three up and three down on a pair of lineouts and a strikeout. The Twins used a double, a groundout and a wild pitch to take a 1-0 lead. Then the second inning happened.

Three straight singles followed by a walk scored the first Baltimore run. A second walk scored run number 2. A single plates two runs and another single plates the fifth run. After a strikeout, run number six scores on a single and finally Gray gets out of it by inducing a double play. Recapping the inning, 10 players produced 6 runs on 6 hits, all singles, 2 walks and scored 5 runs before the first out.

Ironically enough, Gray pitched to thirteen Orioles batters in innings 3 through 6, retiring the side in innings 3, 4 and 5.

Making the most of the second inning was starter Tyler Wells (7-4). Wells faced 24 batters, allowing 2 runs on 6 hits, walking 2, striking out 4 and tossing a wild pitch over 6.0 innings. Wells handed off the quality start to Bryan Baker (2.0 IP, 2 H, 1 BB, 3 K) and Danny Coulombe (1.0 IP, 1 H) to close it out.

Adam Frazier went 1 for 4 with 1 run scored and 2 RBI, Gunnar Henderson went 1 for 4 with 1 RBI, Anthony Santander went 1 for 4 with 1 RBI, All-Star Austin Hays went 1 for 3 with 1 run scored and a walk, Ryan O’Hearn went 1 for 4 with a run scored and Aaron Hicks went 1 for 3 with a run scored and a walk.

Colton Cowser and Ramon Urias both went 1 for 3 with a walk, a run scored and 1 RBI.
