Stop me if you have heard this before: the Baltimore Orioles were no-hit through seven innings and were subsequently shut out 7-0 by the Texas Rangers (40-41). This is the second game in the last five that the Orioles were not hit through seven innings and managed just one hit in a shut out loss. The offense is inexplicably MIA. Across the past five games, Baltimore is batting .166 (24/245).
It is time for Interim Manager Tony Mansolino to face reality and stop blaming these games on “fatigue” and “good pitching” as he did during his post game press conference. This is not the Twilight Zone either as he chalked the past three game up to “weird things”. The Orioles are spinning their wheels and not going anywhere.
Colton Cowser‘s eighth inning lead-off single broke up Jacob deGrom‘s (8-2) no hitter. Jackson Holliday broke up deGrom’s perfect game with a lead-off walk in the seventh inning. In the end, deGrom allowed 1 hit, walked 1 and struck out 7 over 7.0 innings.
Brandon Young (0-2) was called up from Norfolk to make the start and allowed 4 runs on 5 hits, including a Josh Jung homerun in the fourth inning, while walking 1 and striking out 2 in 4.0 innings. Once again, an admittedly over-worked bullpen was called upon to cover 5.0 innings. Four relievers were used with Scott Blewett allowing the game to get out of hand with a 3 run, 3 hit (HR), 1 walk and 1 strikeout effort across 2.0 innings.
Nine of Baltimore’s 27 outs came via the strikeout; every starter except Chadwick Tromp struck out at least once.
Despite all the talk of we’re gonna keep at it and baseball can swing quickly, it is time to face reality and admit that this team is simply stagnant.
