The Train Keeps A Rollin’

September 20, 2023 by Orioles Hangout

Displaying no signs of letting off the gas, the Baltimore Orioles defeated the Houston Astros 9-5 on Tuesday. Maybe altering the batter’s eye wasn’t such a good idea as the Orioles hit four homeruns in the game; Houston did hit three homeruns of their own, however.

Ryan O’Hearn (2 for 5, 1 HR, 2 R, 2 RBI) kicked it off with a two-run homer in the first inning. Austin Hays (2 for 5, 2 HR, 2 R, 4 RBI) hit a three-run homerun in the third inning before adding a solo shot in the seventh. Heston Kjerstad (1 for 4, 1 HR, 1 R, 1 RBI) hit his second career homerun, a solo shot, in the seventh inning as well.

The game also saw a suicide squeeze by James McCann (1 for 3, 1 RBI, 1 HBP) in the sixth inning that allowed Cedric Mullins (1 for 4, 1 R, 1 BB, 2 SB) to score the Orioles 6th run.

Anthony Santander went 2 for 5 with a double and 2 runs scored.

Kyle Gibson started but unfortunately couldn’t get out of the 5th inning, allowing 3 runs on 5 hits (2 HR) while walking 2, striking out 5 and throwing a wild pitch over 4.2 innings.

Jack Flaherty, pitching out of the bullpen, allowed 3 hits, struck out 2, threw a wild pitch and hit a batter over 2.0 innings of relief.

DL Hall (3-0) was the pitcher of record despite allowing 1 run and striking out 1 in 0.2 innings pitched.

Cionel Perez (0.1 IP, 1 K) earned the save, his second, for a three pitch strikeout of Houston slugger Yordan Alvarez; Alvarez never took the bat off of his shoulder during the at-bat.
