It has been said that momentum is only as good as the next day’s starter. Following Saturday’s 18-0 whitewash of the Colorado Rockies (27-78), the momentum kept going thanks to Sunday’s starter Tomoyuki Sugano (8-5). Sugano provided the Baltimore Orioles with his eighth quality start of the season and led the team to 5-1 victory. Sugano made one mistake in his 6.0 inning start, surrendering a second inning homerun to Warming Bernabel on a 0-1 cutter; he walked 2 and struck out 8 to earn the win, his eighth.

O’Neill Swings A Hot Bat

For the third consecutive day OF/DH Tyler O’Neill hit a homerun, this time a 433 ft. blast to left field in the third inning. During the Rockies series O’Neill went 5 for 9 (.556) with a double, 3 homers and 6 RBI. “I’m starting to feel like myself in the batter’s box” was O’Neill’s response to his recent success when asked about it post-game.

Carlson Comes Up Big

Baltimore plated their first two runs in the second inning. Cedric Mullins drew a one-out walk and took third on Coby Mayo‘s double. Dylan Carlson singled to left, allowing both runners to cross the plate.

Henderson Shines

Gunnar Henderson willed the fifth Baltimore run into existence by himself. Following a Ramon Laureano lead-off single in the eighth inning, Henderson hit a grounder to first base. Colorado’s Bernabel chose to get the out at second and the return throw from Ezequiel Tovar sailed into the Baltimore dugout advancing Henderson to second. Henderson scored from second on a Jaden Hill wild pitch the catcher Austin Nola saw to urgency to retrieve.

Henderson also made several stellar defensive plays in the game.

The bullpen trio of Yennier Cano, Andrew Kittredge and Seranthony Dominguez combined to keep Colorado off thr board over the final three innings.

The Orioles are done with the MLB’s worst team and now have the MLB’s best Toronto Blue Jays (63-43) up next for four games in three days in Baltimore.

The Orioles remain 9.0 games back in the Wild Card race.
