Trey Mancini Traded to Houston in Three-Team Deal

August 2, 2022 by Last Word On Baseball

Trey Mancini

The Baltimore Orioles are trading Trey Mancini to the Houston Astros. The Tampa Bay Rays are acquiring Jose Siri from Houston as part of the deal. It’s a three-team deal as the Rays send pitchers Seth Johnson to the Orioles and Jayden Murray to the Astros. It’s believed that Baltimore will be getting another player from Houston. Mancini will fill a void for the American League West-leading Astros. Mancini spent his entire six-year MLB career with the Orioles. This season, Mancini is hitting .268/.347/.404 with 10 home runs and 41 RBI.

Dan Connolly of The Athletic was first to report on the Mancini trade.

Breaking: Don’t know who is involved on Houston Astros end. But Orioles will get multiple players In exchange for Trey Mancini.

The Astros current first baseman, Yuli Gurriel, has not produced at first base this season. As for the right-handed, Mancini has a slash line of .268/.347/.404 with 10 home runs. In addition, his 114 wRC+ ranks well ahead of Gurriel’s wRC+ of 97. But, acquiring the 30-year-old Mancini made sense in many ways. Firstly, he’s a pending free agent as Baltimore made zero attempts to re-sign him. Secondly, Mancini would likely command substantial money playing a position where the Orioles have 25-year-old Ryan Mountcastle to fill the void.

Orioles general manager, Mike Elias, had to pull the trigger here. Despite the limited market due to his position, he had to get something in return for Mancini. Nevertheless, Mancini will bring great leadership to the Astros clubhouse as he is one of the most respected players in baseball. He had Stage colon cancer surgery in 2020, earning American League Comeback Player of the Year honors in 2021. He will be one of the most beloved figures ever coming across Baltimore and Camden Yards. Even though the team has made strides this season, the Orioles are still building towards bright days for years to come.
