SAN FRANCISCO—The Orioles haven’t officially announced it, but Tyler Wells will return from the 60-day injured list to start Tuesday night’s game in San Diego.
Kyle Bradish is listed as Monday’s starter, and Cade Povich will start on Wednesday.
Wells hasn’t pitched since April 12th, 2024. The 6-foot-8, 31-year-old right-hander had season-ending elbow surgery two months later.
“It’s a big-time strike-thrower. He’s got a great changeup,” interim manager Tony Mansolino said. “Right, left, it doesn’t really matter. He’s got a neutrality to him. Competitive, tough angle to the fastball. He was quietly a really good starting pitcher in Major League Baseball prior to the injury.
“He’s a guy that we’re excited to have back on the mound and in the clubhouse. Everybody gives him a hard time. He’s the guy that you mess around with. He kind of helps glue the clubhouse together in a lot of ways.”
The Orioles will add two players on Monday as the rosters expand to 28. One will be 35-year-old reliever Albert Suárez, and Mansolino isn’t sure about the other one. They can add one pitcher and a position player.
Mansolino had previously hinted that Jorge Mateo would be the addition since he’s rehabbing a hamstring injury at Triple-A Norfolk.
“Jorgie, we’re still kind of checking boxes on the rehab assignment,” Mansolino said. “If Jorgie’s feeling great and good, in theory, he’d be the guy on the position-player side. I’m not so sure it’s going to go that way. It might take a couple of days.”
Mateo, Suárez and Wells all must be added to the 40-man roster since they’re on the 60-day injured list. The Orioles currently have 39 players on the 40-man roster.
If Mateo isn’t ready, the Orioles could recall Ryan Noda, a left-hand-hitting first baseman/outfielder who played with them earlier this month. Noda is on the 40-man roster.
