Cade Povich makes his third career start. Gerrit Cole makes his season debut.

It somehow feels like the Orioles have been playing the Yankees for a week with all of the drama and discourse surrounding the fact that a pitch hit Aaron Judge. But it has only been one day and one game for this current series.

I’m not going to rehash all that happened in the wake of yesterday’s game, but if you want to see overreactions and brutish attitudes, you will find it in plenty at the social media destination of your choice. But here is the fallout: Aaron Judge’s x-rays were negative but he is sore and is not starting today. On the Orioles side, Jordan Westburg is also day-to-day with a hip contusion after Juan Soto collided with him in the field.

Adley Rutschman, who bloodied his nose when he bashed his own face into the dirt diving back to second base, is fine. He is in the lineup at catcher.

In light of the injury to Westburg, the Orioles have called up Nick Maton from triple-A Norfolk. Maton is capable of playing second base, third base, and shortstop and will give the Orioles an option while they wait and see on Westburg. He is not in the lineup tonight. Kyle Stowers was sent back to Norfolk to make room.

Cade Povich is making his third career big-league start tonight, and I am hoping it looks a lot like his last start against the Braves when he pitched six shutout innings. If it looks like his first start that he made vs the Blue Jays, it will be a very long night.

For the Yankees, it’s last year’s Cy Young winner Gerrit Cole making his first start of the season. It’s likely that Cole will be on a pitch count tonight so working the count will be imperative for the Orioles. Because of that, they will probably be swinging at the first pitch all night. The Yankees have fared incredibly well without Cole so far this year, so the idea of him getting back and making them even better is a little scary.
