Would Orioles consider making a change with Elias? | MAILBAG

April 23, 2025 by Baltimore Baseball

Question: Pitching was the optimal issue for the O’s in the offseason, and it continues to Sunday’s embarrassing blowout. While Mike Elias brought in talented young players who helped spark the team to two playoff appearances, it seems as if he went in the opposite direction in the last offseason by bringing in aging pitchers. Charlie Morton has seen better days and maybe it’s time to part ways. But is it time for the new owners to part ways with Elias and look for another GM? From: Jeff Bieber

Answer: Jeff, I know you’re frustrated as so many fans are by the 24-2 loss and Charlie Morton’s early-season performance, but there is no way David Rubenstein is going to change general managers 21 games into a season. The Orioles are 9-12, and it’s possible they may not make the postseason, but after two straight playoff appearances, I can’t believe there would be a change in the front office, and certainly not after 13 percent of the season.

Question: I have the Sunday plan and I always trade in our tickets when they play on Easter. It’s a family holiday for a lot of people, and I can’t remember the last time we didn’t have a home game on Easter. I wish they’d mix it up a bit. What do you think? From: Juliesax.bsky.social

Answer: Julie, that’s a most interesting point. Not counting the pandemic years of 2020 and 2021, the Orioles haven’t been away on Easter since 2017.

I understand that it’s a family holiday, but MLB makes the schedule, though the Orioles and all major league teams have the ability to make requests about specific dates. While they’ve been home on Easter most years, they’ve also been away on July 4th and home on Memorial Day most years. The exception was in 2022 when they were home on July 4th and away on Memorial Day.

I hope the schedule-makers send the Orioles on the road for April 5th, 2026 so you can have a happy family holiday without trading in your Sunday tickets.

Most weekdays, I’ll be answering at least one Orioles question. If you’d like to submit a question, send it to: Rich@BaltimoreBaseball.com. Questions may be edited for clarity, length and style.
