Young recalled as Orioles rotation remains in flux

April 23, 2025 by Baltimore Baseball

WASHINGTON—Brandon Young was recalled from Triple-A Norfolk, two days after he was sent down after his major league debut on Saturday. Young doesn’t know what his role will be. When right-handed reliever Cody Poteet was placed on the 15-day injured list with right shoulder inflammation, Young was the choice to replace him.

Young pitched in the bullpen on Tuesday and doesn’t know when he’ll throw next.

“I’m just here to throw when my name is called,” he said. “I haven’t really asked any questions. I’m honored to be here.”

Young allowed three runs on seven hits in four innings on Saturday and was sent down because the Orioles needed another bullpen arm. Poteet, who was called up on Sunday, allowed five runs in 2 2/3 innings in the Orioles’ 24-2 loss to Cincinnati.

Manager Brandon Hyde has scheduled Tomoyuki Sugano to start on Wednesday and Cade Povich on Thursday. He hasn’t decided on starters for this weekend’s series in Detroit.

“We haven’t announced or formalized anything after this series,” Hyde said.

Kyle Gibson, who pitched on Sunday at High-A Aberdeen, could start on Friday. Gibson has had three minor league starts following his March 21st signing. Young is a possibility, too. Charlie Morton remains in the rotation for now. He has a 10.89 ERA in five starts.

“Anything is on the table at this point,” Hyde said. “We’re going to get through this series and see where we are.”

Left-hander Trevor Rogers, who hasn’t pitched this season due to a dislocated right kneecap, will start for Double-A Chesapeake on Wednesday morning, but he’s not an immediate option for the Orioles.

“It’s going to be three or four outings, probably,” Hyde said. “The first outing is probably three innings then we kind of — but the way things are rotation-wise you kind of never know.”

Chayce McDermott, who also hasn’t pitched this season due to a right lat strain is inching closer to a rehab assignment, too.

“He’s a little bit behind Rogers. I don’t think that date has been set in stone, but in the next week or so,” Hyde said.

Hyde said there isn’t any update on Grayson Rodriguez, who was sent for a second opinion on his right shoulder last week.
