The Sky play the Mystics tomorrow, but someone wasn’t too happy about the Chicago guard fouling Indiana Fever rookie Caitlin Clark. She’s coming to the DMV the following day…
The Washington Mystics play the Chicago Sky tomorrow at Capital One Arena. And let’s say that the nation’s capital won’t be that friendly to the visitors, even if Chicago rookie forward Angel Reese comes from nearby Baltimore.
According to Annie Constabile of The Chicago Sun-Times, Sky guard Chennedy Carter was targeted in a confrontation with a male outside a Washington hotel when the Sky’s bus arrived there. Carter was the target, likely because she shoulder-checked Indiana Fever guard Caitlin Clark in a game last weekend. Fortunately, the Sky’s security detail quickly de-escalated the situation.
You can read what the Sky’s players said to defend Carter on X, other social media networks and by clicking on this piece by Jack Baer of Yahoo Sports.
I’m not surprised that a WNBA fan would confront Carter. However, it can be mildly surprising that this would happen in Washington in a vacuum. After all, Clark doesn’t play for the Mystics and she isn’t from the Washington area. Neither is Carter. Furthermore, since Reese is from nearby Baltimore, one would think that the Sky would be more likely to be welcomed by fans from the D.C. area. This is especially the case since they are more likely to be fond of the former LSU star, if nothing else.
However, this is where the Mystics get involved. Not the players, coaches or anything like that. But their scheduling.
Washington will host the Sky tomorrow at Capital One Arena and will host the Fever on Friday night, also at the same arena.
The Fever won’t travel to Washington two days early (since their next game is against Washington), but I can see Fever (and Iowa Hawkeyes) fans arrive a couple days early for an extended weekend vacation in D.C., just like I can see Sky (and LSU fans) being in D.C. right now as well.
This weekend has certainly become a bit more interesting, and it’s not because of anything the Mystics did. Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.
