Key Wizards Role Player Receives Unfortunate Injury Update

With less than a month left in the season, not a lot has gone the Washington Wizards‘ way so far. They are 15-52, which is the second-worst record in the NBA (only ahead of the Utah Jazz). Furthermore, they are statistically the worst offense and the third-worst defense in the NBA. They are, however, 6-5 in their last 11 games. While a playoff appearance is not happening this year, there is a lot to like about the Wizards’ outlook. Unfortunately for them, they provided an unfortunate injury report on Tuesday regarding fourth-year pro Corey Kispert.

Kispert missed the Wizards’ Monday loss to the Portland Trail Blazers with a thumb injury. To that point, the Washington native had only missed five games all the season and none in 2025. However, according to HoopsHype’s Michael Scotto, Kispert underwent thumb surgery and will miss the rest of the season.

Washington Wizards swingman Corey Kispert had season-ending left thumb surgery, which repaired a ligament tear to his left thumb. Kispert is expected to make a full recovery and be ready for the start of next season, team says.

This season, Kispert appeared in 61 games. In those games, he averaged 11.6 points, 3 rebounds, and 1.7 assists.

Key Wizards Role Player Corey Kispert Receives Unfortunate Injury Update

Corey Kispert Wants to Stay in Washington for the Long Haul

Before the start of the season, Kispert signed a four-year, $54 million contract extension to remain in Washington. Recently, the forward doubled down on his desire to stay with the Wizards.

“It’s unique to still only play for one team and organization,” Kispert said. “I feel really comfortable and definitely know my way around town. I know people in the building. That sort of thing goes unnoticed by somebody that doesn’t know much about the NBA, the way you can feel comfortable off the court and how it makes you feel more comfortable on it. Obviously, I love my job. I love what I do and to be able to say with a clear conscience that I love what I do every day, I’m definitely more blessed than a lot of other people.”

While the Wizards have had a few rough seasons in a row, there is a lot of potential there. Alex Sarr, last year’s No. 2 overall draft pick, has greatly come into his own. Additionally, Jordan Poole is having a career season, and players like Bub Carrington and Bilal Coulibaly have a lot of potential as well. At the trade deadline, the Wizards acquired veterans Khris Middleton and Marcus Smart. Next year, it will be interesting to see how they look in their first full season in Washington.

The Last Word

Kispert’s injury will not have an impact on the Wizards’ outlook for the rest of the season. They will not make the playoffs and are going to finish as a bottom team in the NBA. However, he should be able to return next year and make a big impact. The Wizards are not likely to make a playoff appearance as soon as next year. Even so, they are a team to monitor in the future.
