The result wasn’t what we wanted as fans. So let’s see how social media reacted.
Last night, the Washington Wizards received the No. 6 overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft Lottery. Let’s say that the results were not what any Wizards fan hoped for. The No. 1, pick, widely expected to be Duke forward Cooper Flagg, went to the Dallas Mavericks.
First, Renzo Salao was on the stream for most of the Playback stream last night. Here is his reaction to when the Wizards were … relegated to the No. 6 pick. In real time. We were airing the ESPN stream in Playback, but due to legal restrictions, we can’t show a direct side by side comparison of ESPN with Renzo’s reaction.

The Mavericks had just a 1.8 percent chance of winning the draft lottery and did. The Wizards had a 14 percent shot and ended up at No. 6.
Fans are also quick to process the reaction of the Wizards ending up No. 6. Brendan (@threezustrist on X) ran a spaces which featured Domo (@Domo8186) and our own Matt Modderno as well.

The Wizards and Monumental Basketball can’t act too disappointed. First, here is Ted Leonsis’ X post stating his optimism in Monumental Basketball President Michael Winger and Wizards General Manager Will Dawkins.
This year’s @NBA Draft is another opportunity for the @WashWizards to level up and build for the future.
With Michael Winger and Will Dawkins leading the charge we are committed to doing the hard work necessary to build and strengthen our foundation for something special… https://t.co/2Ma2n7Km5j

Reporters also asked Dawkins about his reaction. He rightfully played the “We expected the No. 5 or No. 6 pick all along” card because the Wizards had a combined 47.88 percent chance of getting the No. 5 or No. 6 pick — effectively a 50/50 chance.

Since the NBA Draft lottery odds were tweaked to disincentivize “tanking,” the three worst teams based on regular season record have an equal 14 percent chance of receiving the No. 1 pick, a 13.42 percent chance for receiving the No. 2 pick, a 12.74 percent chance of getting the No. 3 pick and a 11.96 percent chance of getting the No. 4 pick. The odds start to go entirely off of regular season performance from No. 5 on.
The Wizards will figure out who the best player available is in the weeks ahead. And you never know if the Wizards look to trade up or down. One thing does appear to be certain. They won’t have much more star power beyond the players they had on the team that finished in 2024-25, at least right away. And that hurts.
