Summer League comes to an end
The Washington Wizards 2025 Summer League comes to an end in Las Vegas this afternoon with a matchup against the New York Knicks. In summer league terms, the teams have a bit in common. Both are 1-3. Washington has the fourth worst scoring differential. New York is sixth worst.
The similarities end when looking at the rosters. The Knicks are a competitive team that hasn’t had a high first round pick for a few years. Pacome Dadiet was their first round selection last year (25th overall). He’s played two games so far this summer.
Fun fact: Kyshawn George was technically a Knicks pick in 2024. That 24th pick started with the Dallas Mavericks, who sent it to New York as part of the Kristaps Porzingis trade. In the bizarre way the league accounts for draft picks, the Knicks officially picked George and then traded him on draft night to Washington for Dillon Jones and a second round pick. Jones went 26th overall.
That 26th pick started with the Los Angeles Clippers and ended up with the Oklahoma City Thunder in the Paul George for a billion picks and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander. Washington got this pick from the Dallas Mavericks as part of the Daniel Gafford trade. Dallas got the pick to deal to Washington by giving OKC swap rights in 2028.
The Wizards used this pick plus that 2024 second (who became Melvin Ajinca) to trade for George.
Now, the Wizards have both Jones and George. I’m calling on Will Dawkins to pay the Knicks a couple seconds for Dadiet to complete the collection.
Got all that? There’ll be a quiz.
Since neither team is likely to play anyone who figures into their rotations for next season, it’ll be a good opportunity to see some end-of-the-bench or G League candidates.
What I’m looking to see:
- Can anyone in a Wizards uniform make threes? The only players on the roster who shot better than 28% on threes this summer (Will Riley, Tre Johnson, Bub Carrington) won’t play today.
- Can Jamir Watkins win the summer league steals title? He and OKC’s Brooks Barnhizer are currently tied for the lead with 15 swipes each. Both have one game to play. Watkins is fifth in steals per game.
- No injuries.
Bonus Fun Fact: Alex Sarr leads summer league with 5.5 blocks per game. He’s third in total blocks despite playing just two games. The two players ahead of him in total blocks are Christian Koloko (who’s played in five games), and Tolu Smith (who’s played in four).
Where to watch
