Oklahoma City Thunder Are Trading NBA Championship Player For Colby Jones

June 30, 2025 by The Spun

The 5 Craziest Trades In NBA History (2:14)

The Oklahoma City Thunder are already breaking the band up less than a week removed from their first NBA championship.

According to basketball insider Shams Charania, “The Oklahoma City Thunder are trading guard Dillon Jones and a second-round pick to the Washington Wizards, sources tell ESPN. … Washington is sending guard Colby Jones to the Thunder, who will then release him.”

Jones appeared in 54 games and made three starts for OKC where he averaged 2.5 points, 2.2 rebounds and 1.1 assists in 10.2 minutes of action. Ironically, Jones was selected with the 26th overall pick by the Wizards before being traded by the Thunder by way of the Knicks.

The 6’5″ guard was a three-time All-Big Sky selection at mid-major Weber State where he averaged a double-double for his career and was also named the conference’s Player of the Year in 2023.

Fans reacted to the move on X:

“you forgot to add ‘..trading 1x NBA Champion guard Dillon Jones’ in there Shams,” a user said.

“Sad day,” Joel Lorenzi replied. “Dillon was probably my favorite interview on this Thunder team. Smart player, insightful, unapologetically himself so he rarely had a filter. Hope he makes something happen in DC.”

“Legend,” George Stoia III commented.

“my goat, dc is his city now,” Ben Pfeifer posted.

“Great trade for OKC, Jones costs them second round picks coming and going but was never going to work here. Washington gives him a fresh start with more opportunities,” Ryan Stiles shared.

“Roster spot has been cleared. Just over a year ago, OKC traded five second-round picks to get back into the first round to select Dillon Jones. He now becomes a roster spot casualty. Part of being a loaded team.”

As for Colby Jones, he averaged a career-high 8.2 points per game in his 15 contests with the Wizards. He’ll look to parlay that into a new gig after he’s released by the Thunder and the deal goes through.
