Women’s Basketball Preview and Schedule for July 29

All games can be streamed on Peacock. Check NBCSports.com to see if a game is on television. Every game in the group stage will be at Decathlon Arena (or Stade Pierre Mauroy) in Lille.

Today’s games are in Groups B and C. Times are in Eastern Time. Parisian or Central European Time is six hours ahead of Eastern Time. Also I’ve added any pregame takes below since all of the teams have a current or former Washington Mystics player on a roster in each contest.

  • Group B: Nigeria vs. Australia at 5 a.m. — We will see Jade Melbourne and the Opals take on D’Tigresses. Expect Australia to win big against the lone FIBA Africa team in this tournament.
  • Group C: Belgium vs. Germany at 7:30 a.m. — Julie Vanloo and the Cats will take on another rising power in FIBA Europe and Dallas Wings forward Satou Sabally is on their team. However, Belgium has made easy work out of teams in their continent in recent years. So I expect them to win here. Also, keep in mind that Lille is less than 20 miles southwest of Kortrijk, a major city in West Flanders province, which is where Vanloo and multiple other Cats are from — which I’ve written about repeatedly. Again, these group stage games are effectively Cats home games, especially because they won’t be playing France in this stage.
  • Group B: France vs. Canada at 11:15 a.m. ET — Les Bleues will have home court advantage against Aaliyah Edwards and Team Canada. But France is one of the heavyweights in the world and will be favored to win. We’ll see what happens thought!
  • Group C: United States vs. Japan at 3 p.m. ET — Former Mystics guard Rui Machida will face off against the Gold Medal favorites in a rematch of the 2020 Olympics gold medal game. This game will likely be lopsided in Team USA’s favor.

Enjoy the games everyone!
