France is the host, Germany won the 2023 FIBA World Cup, and Team USA qualified by being the second best team in FIBA Americas in the World Cup. But who else is in?
Last March, FIBA announced the groups in the men’s basketball tournament for the 2024 Olympics. However, four spots were yet to be finalized pending tournaments in July, with those games ending earlier today. Here are the 12 teams headed to Paris along with how they finished in the 2023 FIBA World Cup, which was the Olympic Qualifying tournament for most teams OR if they won a July 2024 Olympic Qualifying tournament:
Group A
- Australia (best team in FIBA Oceania)
- Canada (best team in FIBA Americas)
- Greece (won Olympic qualifying tournament in July 2024)
- Spain (won Olympic qualifying tournament in July 2024)
Group B
- France (host country)
- Germany (2023 FIBA World Cup champions AND best team in FIBA Europe)
- Japan (best team in FIBA Asia)
- Brazil (won Olympic qualifying tournament in July 2024)
Group C
- Serbia (2nd best team in FIBA Europe)
- South Sudan (best team in FIBA Africa)
- United States (2nd best team in FIBA Americas)
- Puerto Rico (won Olympic qualifying tournament in July 2024)
The men’s basketball tournament begins on July 27 in Lille for the group stage. It concludes on Aug. 10 in Paris for the medal stage.
All 12 teams in the Olympic women’s basketball tournament were already decided last February since their qualification structure is a little different than the men. Their groups were also decided last March.
