Pregame Notes
After a brutal start to the season, the Mystics now trail the Chicago Sky by 3 games for the final playoff spot. The two-time defending champion Aces had a relatively brutal start to the season themselves, but they rebounded by going 9-1 in their last ten games.
A’ja Wilson is the heavy favorite to win the WNBA’s MVP award this season, and the Mystics do not have the personnel to contain her in the paint. The best-case scenario for Washington is limiting Wilson to “just” 25 points and 12 rebounds.
Aaliyah Edwards has cooled off slightly since a really solid start to her rookie season, but getting to defend Wilson down low will be an incredible learning experience.
The game against the Aces is Washington’s second-to-last game ahead of the Olympic break. No Mystics are representing Team USA in Paris, but three are representing their own home countries: Julie Vanloo (Belgium), Aaliyah Edwards (Canada) and Jade Melbourne (Australia). A whopping four Aces are representing the United States at the Olympics: A’ja Wilson, Kelsey Plum, Jackie Young and Chelsea Gray.
