Washington fell to 0-3 on the season
The Washington Mystics lost to the Seattle Storm on Sunday, 84-75.
Following a fourth-quarter collapse in Connecticut, Washington returned home to face the Seattle Storm. Seattle was coming off its own difficult loss, losing in double-OT to the Minnesota Lynx.
The contest started slow, with neither side scoring in the game’s opening two minutes and thirty seconds. Mystics rookie Aaliyah Edwards got the start with Shakira Austin out and made an immediate impact, draining a layup. Julie Vanloo also picked up where she left off, diming the first two Mystics baskets.
Karlie Samuelson drained a pair of threes to keep Washington close, but it was Seattle that outpaced Washington in the first half, entering the break up by five.
The Mystics climbed back to take a five-point third-quarter lead behind strong buckets from Ariel Atkins. Washington entered the final frame in the lead once more, ahead by two against Seattle.
However, the Storm had an answer, blitzing the Mystics in the fourth quarter just as the Sun did a game ago. Jewell Lloyd was Seattle’s closer as her squad outscored Washington 22-11 in the fourth quarter. The Mystics dropped another winnable game due to fourth-quarter woes, falling to 0-3 on the season.
Jewell Lloyd dropped 24 points for the Storm and Ariel Atkins led the Mystics with 19 points in a 84-75 Storm win.
After a slow start to her career, Mystics rookie Aaliyah Edwards showed exactly why Washington selected her sixth overall. Edwards dropped nine points and 11 rebounds, looking solid against a tough Storm squad.
