Potomac Yard could be the Wizards’ and Capitals’ home as soon as 2027 if everything goes the Virginia government’s way.
Members of the Virginia General Assembly are considering a plan that could move Monumental Sports & Entertainment’s Washington Wizards and Capitals to Alexandria, Va., according to Teo Armus, Laura Vozzella, Sam Fortier and Gregory S. Schneider of The Washington Post.
If the plan comes through, Monumental Sports would play in a new arena in Potomac Yard and lease from a stadium authority. Potomac Yard recently opened a new Metro station and it is also just two miles away from Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport in Arlington.
Though this plan just came out today, it’s far from clear as to whether it’s Monumental Sports’ first choice. They also asked the DC government $600 million to renovate Capital One Arena last November.
Assuming Monumental Sports plans on moving to Alexandria, they could do so as soon as 2027. It also could be the company’s most attractive offer, because the DC government also wants to finance a stadium in the city for the Washington Commanders, who are now owned by Philadelphia 76ers owner Josh Harris, not Dan Snyder.
Also, Virginia is the largest state without a major professional sports team playing in it. The closest would be the Commanders, whose headquarters is in Ashburn.
I want the Wizards to stay at Capital One, but this move looks enticing too.
