Wizards fans give poor grades for Washington’s 2023-24 NBA season

This is not a surprise given that the Wizards had their worst season in franchise history.

Thanks for your responses to this week’s SB Nation Reacts survey Washington Wizards fans. We will go over the results of our one-question survey today.

The question we asked earlier this week was how you would grade the Wizards’ performance in the 2023-24 NBA season. Out of our over 200 respondents, 41 percent gave the team an F. The median grade was a D, with 28 percent of respondents giving the Wizards that mark.

I personally would give the Wizards a D. Like Kevin Broom wrote earlier today, the Wizards were expected to be among the worst NBA teams. They were more or less expected to have their worst season in franchise history and delivered. But I don’t think the Wizards failed outright, given that expectations were low.

That said, here’s why I still would give them a D. It’s not so much related to wins and losses or Jordan Poole’s season. My gripes are with the front office:

  1. Wes Unseld, Jr. should have been fired as head coach when Will Dawkins and Michael Winger were hired. It’s not because of Unseld, but because we know the new front office would want to start fresh. Instead, Dawkins and Winger kept Unseld, and they effectively had to give Unseld his fourth-year option so the Wizards wouldn’t have a lame-duck coach. And sure enough, they had to transition Unseld to the front office midseason and keep him on payroll through 2025 either way.
  2. Though this news came out AFTER the results, I was hoping NOT to see a report that the Wizards were keeping Brian Keefe and David Vanterpool. If the Wizards are going to do a national search for a new head coach, they need to do a national search for a new head coach WITHOUT reports saying that the interim head coach remaining as a holdover. It just further supports why I would give the front office a poor grade after “Year Zero” of a rebuild.

What grade would you give the Wizards? Am I being too harsh? Let us know in the comments below.
