Wizards Outline Injury Timelines For Key European Duo

September 25, 2025 by Last Word On Pro Basketball

WASHINGTON — Wizards GM Will Dawkins delivered updates on two young cornerstones ahead of training camp. Bilal Coulibaly and Alex Sarr are both recovering from injuries, though their timetables differ.

Dawkins confirmed that Coulibaly will miss camp after undergoing thumb-ligament surgery on Sept. 12. The team expects him back during the first or second week of the regular season. That projection matches the original timeline reported by Josh Robbins of The Athletic.

Sarr’s outlook is brighter. The rookie center is recovering from a strained calf suffered during France’s EuroBasket run. He will miss the start of camp but could return before it ends. The Wizards remain confident he will reclaim his starting role early.

Bilal Coulibaly’s EuroBasket Struggles

The updates arrive after a difficult summer for Coulibaly. France entered EuroBasket hoping for a leap, but the forward failed to deliver. Across six games, he averaged 6.3 points and 4.3 rebounds while shooting just 21.4 percent from three. In France’s stunning loss to Georgia, he went scoreless on three attempts.

That performance added pressure. Coulibaly has already faced questions about his fit in Washington’s rotation. His disappointing EuroBasket raised new doubts about whether his long-term role lies in offense or defense.

The Wizards have a crowded wing group. New additions will limit his touches. For Coulibaly to earn minutes, he must add value without the ball. That means spacing the floor, cutting decisively, and embracing defensive assignments.

A Crowded Roster and Future Questions

Since drafting Coulibaly in 2023, Washington has added eight players aged 22 or younger. The frontcourt is especially loaded, creating a competitive environment. Dawkins has emphasized development, but playing time will not come easily.

Coulibaly’s tools remain intriguing. At 6-foot-8 with a 7-foot-3 wingspan, he can defend multiple positions and contest above the rim. He flashed promise last season when guarding elite scorers. Still, consistency remains his challenge.

The clock is ticking. Coulibaly becomes extension-eligible in July 2026. If he fails to convince the front office, restricted free agency in 2027 could define his future. His deal may also set a benchmark for how the Wizards handle their young core.

Looking Ahead

Coulibaly and Sarr’s injury return timeline provides clarity but also heightens expectations  for the Wizards faithful. Sarr’s quick recovery would stabilize Washington’s frontcourt. Coulibaly, however, faces a more complicated path.

Surgery alone does not define his season. He could bounce back strong, or the missed training camp could slow his rhythm. For now, the conundrum underscores the uncertainty around one of Washington’s most intriguing prospects.

The Wizards believe in his upside, but belief must soon translate into production. Whether through defense or efficiency, Coulibaly must make himself indispensable.
