I will be breaking down this trade in more detail in a live episode of Bleav in Wizards around at 11:45 a.m. EST today. Joining me will be Bryce Simon of Motor City Hoops and the Pistons Pulse podcast. He’s really plugged in on everything Detroit Pistons so he can help break down what the Wizards are actually getting back.
My first thought is why would the Pistons do this? Well, the simple answer is cap space. They’re essentially paying to get off of Bagley’s money because he’s redundant with several players on their roster currently. And he just so happens to play a position that the Wizards value.
From the Wizards’ perspective, getting anything in return for the two veteran bigs is a win in my book. Bagley is still young and a former top-5 pick so he’s worth betting on that you can rehab his value. You essentially have to play him here now so I doubt his value could go down from here.
At some point in his short career, Pistons fans seemed pretty high on Isaiah Livers. It seems like that has flipped this season but perhaps a change of scenery will do him some good as well. Worst case scenario, the Wizards traded two older players who didn’t have a future here for second-round picks. At this rate, they may eventually control every second-round pick ever.
