Washington acquired Cissoko from the Sacramento Kings on Wednesday as part of the Jonas Valanciunas trade. The Wizards also received a pair of second-round picks as part of the package.
Cissoko, 20, stands 6-foot-6 and offers versatility on the defensive end. He was the 44th pick in the 2023 NBA Draft and appeared in 29 NBA games for the San Antonio Spurs before being shipped the Sacramento on Tuesday.
Waiving Cissoko opens a roster spot for Washington, which it can use in another trade to take on salary. The Wizards have a $12.4 million trade exception created from last year’s Daniel Gafford trade that they could use to absorb unwanted salary in exchange for acquiring more future draft capital.
It’s also possible that Cissoko is brought back on a two-way contract now that Washington has a vacant two-way spot after trading Patrick Baldwin Jr. to Milwaukee.
